Forensic Accountant & Accountancy Expert Witness

 

Peter is a Forensic Accountant and Accountancy Expert Witness with more than 25 years of experience. Peter qualified as a Chartered Accountant with a large firm in 1990 and was a partner in a mid tier accountancy practice with one of the largest Forensic Accounting groups in the UK.

 

Peter began his training in assurance undertaking statutory and non-statutory audits of financial statements. Since then he has been involved in due diligence assignments, major insolvencies and large forensic assignments. Since specializing in Forensic Accounting he has managed major fraud investigations, professional negligence claims, regulatory and competition issues, mass claims handling of war damages and the quantification of losses flowing from a wide range of contractual disputes. During this time Peter has dealt with UK GAAP, IFRS, US GAAP and other national accounting rules.

 

As a forensic accountant, Peter’s role is to ensure financial information relied upon in contentious matters is pertinent, relevant and reliable. This involves the in-depth investigation, verification and analysis accounting records and financial statements. He also interprets and explains the application of accounting practices and terminology pertinent to disputes.

 

Peter‘s work may require the investigation of his client’s own accounting information or the challenge and critical evaluation of the adverse parties position in a dispute. This always requires an approach based on first principles and the application of judgment in the context of contentious issues. Peter’s experience allows him to quickly gaining insight and understanding of challenging technical accounting matters and frequently requires the reconstruction of accounting records and restatement of financial information.

 

Peter has over the course of his career produced numerous expert reports for both litigation and arbitrations, has participated in meetings of experts and has given evidence on a number of occasions in the English High Court and before arbitral tribunals under LCIA, ICC, SCC and LMAA rules. He has prepared submissions to common law determining experts as well as experts under civil law binding advice procedures and is regularly instructed as a determining expert.

 

Peter specializes in disputes in respect of contractual issues (such as acquisitions, joint ventures and royalty/licensing agreements) which require a combination of the investigation of accounting records and the interpretation of the accounting provisions of legal agreements.

 

Peter has a background in the shipping and marine industry. He has a degree in Naval Architecture and Shipbuilding, an MSc in International Shipping and remains a member of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers.

 

During his career, Peter has undertaken investigations and assignments throughout Europe (France, Sweden, Finland, Norway, Germany Italy, Spain, the Netherlands) and in both the Middle East and the Far East.
